Minority Instrument Lessons

Now that students and schools choose the instruments they would like to play (a reasonable enough proposition until one stops to consider the results), there are simply no longer enough players of certain instruments to form balanced orchestras. School orchestras, youth orchestras, university, adult groups and even professional orchestras nationwide are all suffering shortages. The flute fits in the school bag nicely, but you only need two of them in an orchestra. If you play the saxophone, guitar, drum-kit or keyboard you can't join an orchestra at all. There's absolutely nothing wrong with these instruments - it's just that there are too many people playing them - but you didn't realise that when you started. You didn't realise that if you learnt the Oboe, Bassoon, French Horn, Trombone, Viola, Double Bass or Orchestral Percussion instead you would suddenly become very exclusive and highly sought after.
In an effort to do something about the shortage of these instruments Gloucestershire Music has set up a Minority Instrument Teaching Scheme - or as we all call it - "Endangered Species Teaching".  Brookfield is the main centre for minority instrument teaching in the County, so even if you already play something else we can arrange for you to have lessons on any of the instruments listed here as well, and for the larger instruments - bassoon and double bass - mini versions can be provided.
If you are interested, ask us. Anything you have learnt on your present instrument will make learning a second instrument much quicker, and you will get far more opportunities to perform -
and
that's what music's all about.
