GYS was formed in 1990 to act
as a training orchestra - bridging the gap between the intermediate orchestras:
(GAYO, CAYO, SAYO) and Gloucestershire Youth
Orchestra. The intention was to form a "repertoire group" tackling full symphonic works, but at a more leisurely pace, and with a reduced concert schedule. GYS has been very successful in this role, but has also developed a very definite identity of its own, with an infectious, friendly "Friday-Night" atmosphere at rehearsals. In fact many players enjoy their time with the orchestra so much that even after progressing to a senior group they continue their membership of GYS. The age range is predominantly 15-18 and above, although younger members are always welcome and seem to co-exist with the older members quite happily. Concerts are given in major venues such as Cheltenham Town Hall, Pittville Pump Rooms, and Gloucester Cathedral, and often include a concerto item from an ex-member. |

CAYO is a large, enthusiastic
orchestra providing young musicians with the opportunity of playing a wide range of
orchestral music. There is an active parents committee which allows families to
participate fully in the musical and social life of the orchestra and specialist coaches
are regularly engaged to rehearse the orchestral sections. As well as being hard working the orchestra has a happy, relaxed atmosphere. There are informal morning concerts, combined with a coffee morning for parents and friends, and a weekend course at the end of the Spring term with a concert in the Pittville Pump Room. . Many CAYO players later become members of the Gloucestershire Youth Sinfonia and the Gloucestershire Youth Orchestra. |

| The Gloucester Area Youth
Orchestra was formed in 1995 and is the latest in an unbroken line of youth orchestras
serving the City of Gloucester and its surrounding area dating back to 1953. The orchestra of around fifty players tackle a wide ranging repertoire, from standard classical pieces to music from the twentieth century. The emphasis is on learning a sound rehearsal routine, coupled with an enjoyable working atmosphere. GAYO provides an excellent introduction to the disciplines of orchestral rehearsal and performance technique, and is intended to play an important role in providing players for the Gloucestershire Youth Sinfonia. |

TPrimarily a training
orchestra, SAYO aims to train its members in the skills and disciplines of orchestral
playing and introduce them to a repertoire beyond the reach of music centres and school
orchestras. Thanks to expert coaching this training orchestra has, in recent seasons,
performed symphonies by Dvorak, Schubert, Haydn, Bizet and Beethoven as well as other
large works which have stretched the capabilities of its players but brought immense
pleasure to all involved. Rehearsals are a blend of fun and hard work with an accent on learning rather than sight-reading skills. A concert is usually given towards the end of each term. Many SAYO players later become members of the Gloucestershire Youth Sinfonia and the Gloucestershire Youth Orchestra. |
