Concerts for Schools About the Concert Programmes The concert forms part of the Cultural Enrichment Programme made available without charge from Gloucestershire Music. Whilst we hope that you and your pupils will enjoy the concert you will experience, the main purpose of the programme is to promote school improvement through music in a presentation which will support your school’s curricular provision for music education. |

Who will present
the Concert? The concert is presented by members of Gloucestershire Music. They are qualified teachers with substantial experience of providing tuition to groups of pupils in schools within the County. They are also very experienced performers in a variety of orchestras, bands and other ensembles. You will receive a presentation from either a string, woodwind or brass group. |

What can we expect
from the Concert? Each group will present a lively and interesting programme of music played in a variety of styles. The repertoire is chosen so as to extend pupil’s musical experience and knowledge, and to develop their appreciation of the richness of our diverse cultural heritage. The music performed will be introduced by members of the groups. Pupils will be provided with enough information for them to enjoy and understand the music that they will hear. In some cases they will be able to participate either by providing a rhythmic accompaniment or by singing. Overall the content of the concert will focus on the programmes of study for music in the National Curriculum, but a number of cross-curricular links are established, particularly with literacy, numeracy as well as with science. |

How can we prepare for
the Concert? Simply inform the pupils that they will be receiving a concert from one of the Gloucestershire Music’s ensembles - strings, woodwind or brass. There is little other preparation required, except to provide five adult chairs (without arms) for the performers. Formal introductions to the pupils, though welcome, are not necessary since the performers introduce themselves at the beginning of the concert. The main aim of the concert is to educate and enthuse. Concert etiquette is not a priority and with the nature of the programme many pupils, especially the younger ones, will join in and contribute - sometimes during the playing. This is not off-putting to the performers who will deal with these situations as they arise. Sometimes they capitalise on the pupils’ spontaneous contribution in order to underline educational and musical points. |

The next step -
curriculum music Some of the pieces that the pupils will hear in the concert programme will prompt follow-up musical activities in the classroom. You will receive a booklet produced by Gloucestershire Music which will outline a number of music activities which can be undertaken across the key stages by any teacher. Suggestions for lesson plans are provided to enable pupils to develop further their performing, composing and listening and appraising skills.

Workshops for
Schools What are Workshops? Gloucestershire Music actively promotes pupils’ musical development through workshops, which form part of the Cultural Enrichment Programme. These workshops provide a comprehensive learning experience that not only enhances instrumental skills but, by bringing together young musicians from several schools, often offers them their first experience of large group playing. Instrumental workshops range from strings, woodwind and brass to singing, guitars, keyboard, recorder and percussion ensembles. They will normally last for two hours but larger workshops are occasionally organised to bring together groups of woodwind, brass or string players to participate in a half day of ensemble playing. |
What are the
benefits? Because students attending a workshop will be at different standards they will benefit in different ways. These will include ensemble skills, technical development, an insight into different musical cultures, theory training and a renewed enthusiasm in their own musical endeavours. Workshops are not only designed to develop individual instrumental skills but they are also to assist schools’ curricular provision for music education. Where appropriate, workshops will include the full range of activities from the National Curriculum Programme of Study; from listening and appraising, improvising and composing and performing. Other benefits include the development of personal discipline and awareness, social interaction, and cultural awareness. Class teachers who actively participate in our group workshops (singing, recorder and percussion) will gain valuable practical experience and professional development which in turn, can be implemented into their school’s music curriculum. |
Who presents the
Workshops? The workshops we offer are presented by qualified and experienced music communicators, many of whom are also employed as peripatetic instrumental teachers by the LEA. |
How can we prepare
for the workshop? There is no preparation work to be undertaken by the schools. However, in the case of ensembles such as singing or percussion, we recommend the school’s teacher in charge of music attends the workshop as aspects of the National Curriculum will be covered. Schools will normally be approached by the Workshop Organiser to seek permission for their pupils to take part and invitations may also come from the instrumental teachers |
Where are the
workshops held? Workshops are held either at a host school, a convenient centre close to all participating schools, at one of Gloucestershire Music's music centres or at Colwell Arts Centre in Gloucester. |
